Something I get asked a lot is how to do a 3-card Tarot reading. It’s one of the most popular spreads, especially for those who are learning to read Tarot.

So today, I’m going to show you how exactly to do a 3-card Tarot reading.

Let’s start with exactly what 3-card spread to use.

Most people learn the Past / Present / Future spread. But I actually like to use something a little different for my readings. It’s the Situation, Problem, Action spread.

Now, think of a question or a situation you’re struggling with. For today, let’s say we’re wanting to restore a troubled friendship.

With the question in mind, shuffle your deck, then lay out the first 3 cards.

The first card is the situation. Here I got the Devil, which to me says this is a pretty intense friendship. One person that is dependent on the other person, which can lead to uncomfortable feelings.

The second card is the problem. This is the 4 of Cups which shows a young man being offered cups but he’s not interested.  So this says to me that one person in the relationship is not into all the attention they are getting from the other person. They aren’t as excited about the relationship.

And the final card is the recommended course of action. And this is the Empress who is nurturing and supportive.  Maybe the person that is so excited and overly attentive needs to take care of their own needs and grow.

Now, you might be ready to say “Job done!” but what a good Tarot reader will do is go back to the original question and make sure it’s answered clearly.

So, how can we restore a troubled friendship? With these cards I would say it’s about giving your friend a little more space and not being so needy and dependent.  Share love and nurture the friendship in a way that allows it space.

So that’s how to do a 3-card reading – nice and easy. Choose your spread, ask your question and lay out the cards. Then, go through each card, look for connections and answer the original question. That’s it!
