Ep. 4: Why the Best Tarot Readings Don’t Predict the Future

For generations, Tarot was treated like a crystal ball.

You asked what was going to happen, the reader interpreted the cards, and you waited to see whether the prediction came true.

But Tarot is evolving.

Today, people don’t just want a glimpse of the future. They want to understand what’s shaping it. They want to recognize the patterns influencing their choices, see where their power lies and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

This changes everything.

Tarot is shifting from a tool that predicts your future into one that helps you consciously create it.

And the role of the Tarot reader is changing with it.

Our job is no longer to deliver answers from a position of authority. It’s to help people see what they couldn’t see before, reconnect with their own wisdom and make empowered choices about what happens next.

In this fourth episode of our special 7-part series, we’re exploring how to move beyond prediction and create Tarot readings that don’t simply tell people what might happen – they help people change what happens next.

Reflection Questions

Think about the Tarot readings you currently give.

Do you simply interpret the cards and offer a likely outcome? Or do you help the person see what’s shaping that outcome – and what they can influence or change?

To go deeper, you might like to pull a Tarot card and ask, How can I make my Tarot readings more empowering and transformational?

Then practice one shift in your next reading. Reframe a predictive question to open up more choice. Invite the client to share what they see.

Because the best Tarot readings don’t make people dependent on the reader. They help people trust themselves.

Tarot is going through one of the most significant shifts that we’ve seen in a very long time.

For generations, Tarot was mostly seen as a fortune telling tool. You go to a reader, you ask what was going to happen, and then you waited for the cards to reveal the future and the answer.

And of course, people are still curious about what’s going to happen to them, but it’s no longer the whole story of what Tarot is about.

The thing is that spirituality is becoming more mainstream. People are more open to things like intuition, self awareness, healing, and personal growth.

And at the same time, we have this world that’s becoming faster, noisier, and harder to navigate because it’s so overstimulating.

So people are starting to naturally turn to tools like Tarot for more than a prediction or a quick answer.

They actually want to get clarity about what’s happening now.

They want to understand the patterns that are shaping their lives.

They want to know what they can influence, what they can change, and how they can start to move forward with more confidence and more clarity.

And that’s what is fundamentally changing how Tarot is used.

So in the last few episodes, we’ve been exploring how things like intuition and human connection are becoming more important for Tarot readers.

But this particular shift of going from prediction into more about transformation goes even deeper because it asks us to reconsider the purpose of the reading itself.

It’s asking us to think about, what is a Tarot reading actually here to do?

Is it simply here to tell someone what’s going to happen to them or give them an easy answer?

Or is it here to help them understand themselves more deeply, reconnect with their own inner wisdom and inner agency, and make a more conscious choice about what happens next?

So that’s what I want to explore with you in this episode, because I believe that this is actually one of the most exciting changes happening in Tarot right now.

It asks more of us as readers, but it also gives us the opportunity to step into a more evolved version of this work, one that doesn’t simply predict someone’s future or give a quick answer, but helps them participate more consciously in creating their future.

Because let’s be real, it can be super satisfying to just give someone the answer about their future or tell them what they need to do next.

You can look at the spread, look at the cards, identify the direction, and then share what the cards seem to be showing.

And maybe they feel relieved, but then what?

What do they do with that information?

Does the reading really help them understand the pattern they’re caught in, or help them see what they’ve not been willing to acknowledge?

Does it show them where their power still exists?

Or do they simply leave and wait and see if that prediction is going to come true or not?

Because a prediction can tell someone what could happen, but it doesn’t really tell them who they are, what they’re bringing to the situation, what choices are available, what energies or influences are present, or what might shift the outcome more into their favor.

And this is where the real evolution of Tarot begins, because we have an opportunity here to offer something so much more powerful than a prediction alone.

We can use the cards not only to look ahead, but to help someone understand what is happening with them right now.

What’s the pattern that’s shaping the experience?

What do they need to understand about themselves to move forward?

What are they not seeing about themselves?

What do they truly want or desire?

What choices are available to them?

What might they be avoiding?

What is within their power to influence?

And this is really where Tarot begins to shift from being like a crystal ball to becoming like a mirror to the soul.

Because a crystal ball directs your attention outward.

It says, “What’s coming? What’s going to happen? What’s the outcome?”

And you’re almost powerless to change what that outcome is.

But a mirror turns the focus inward.

It asks, “What’s this situation showing me? What are the lessons here? What am I bringing to it? What do I already know that I cannot yet trust? What choice is available to me now? What’s my next step?”

So prediction can tell you what’s coming, but the mirror helps you see what’s already happening and how you can start to shape your future.

And that is where empowerment really begins.

Because once someone can see the pattern, they’re no longer caught inside it in the same way.

They have more awareness, more choice, and a clear opportunity to act.

And that is a truly profound shift, because the client is no longer passively waiting for the future to arrive.

They’re beginning to recognize the part they can actually play in shaping what comes next.

They get to not just know the future, but create the future.

And this fundamentally changes the reading, and it changes the kind of reader we’re called to become.

So how do we create readings that are more empowering and transformational?

It begins with the way we frame the question.

For example, if the question is, will I get the job?

Then guess what? The reading is immediately set up to deliver a yes or a no.

It’s going to happen or it’s not.

But if we shift that question to, what do I need to understand about this opportunity?

Or, how can I put myself in the strongest position moving forward?

Then we create room for something so much more useful.

We can still explore the likely outcome and where we’re heading, but now we can also look at what the person can influence, what they might not be seeing, and what this situation is asking them to develop or change.

So an empowering question doesn’t just ask the client to surrender control to the cards.

It helps them actively engage more consciously with the situation.

And the same is true of how we interpret the cards.

In the old fortune telling model, the reader becomes the person who knows everything.

They’re the one who pulls the cards, declares what it means, tells the client what is going to happen, and then the client sits back, receives that answer, and waits for things to unfold.

But when we use Tarot for self awareness and transformation, the reading becomes more collaborative.

It’s co-created.

So instead of saying, “All right, well, this card means the relationship is going to end,” you might explore what the card is revealing about the relationship as it stands now.

What’s present?

What’s not being expressed?

What may happen if nothing changes?

And what possibility could open if the client responds differently?

And here’s the thing, as the reader, you might share what you’re seeing in that card.

But then you ask your client, “How does that connect with your experience?”

Or, “Which part of this feels most relevant to you?”

Or even, “What do you see in this card? What’s speaking to you?”

Now, that doesn’t make you a worse reader.

In fact, it makes you a better reader, in my opinion.

Because you’re still bringing your knowledge, your intuition, and your ability to interpret the cards, but you’re no longer being the all-knowing guru handing down a fixed meaning as if the client has nothing they can do to change the outcome.

You’re helping them be part of that reading, recognize themselves, and have space and time to integrate the messages so they truly land.

You’re giving them the opportunity to access their own intuition and decide what really feels true.

And then there is a final part to this, and that is, what happens after the reading?

Because seeing something clearly is powerful, but insight alone doesn’t create transformation.

So the client may recognize a pattern they’ve been repeating or a truth they’ve been avoiding, but if the reading ends there, they can still walk away and keep doing the same thing over and over.

A more empowering reading helps them consider what they will do with what they see in the reading.

What choice is available to you?

What conversation needs to happen?

What boundaries need to be set?

What is one practical and aligned step they can take?

Now, the idea is not to tell them what they have to do.

It is to help them leave with greater clarity about the decision that truly belongs to them.

And this is what fundamentally changes the role of the Tarot reader.

You are no longer the hero.

You’re no longer positioned as the all-knowing authority who has the answers and tells the client what their future holds.

So if it’s not you being the hero, who is it?

It’s actually the client.

The client is the hero of the reading, and you as the reader become the advisor.

You become the guide and the facilitator who helps them see more clearly, reconnect with their own inner wisdom, and move from insight into meaningful change.

So instead of you being put on the pedestal as the reader, you’re putting your client in the forefront and asking, “What does this client need so they can move forward with confidence? How can I help this person integrate these messages, see what they need to see, and then take that and turn it into action?”

That’s really the essence of how the client becomes the hero of the reading.

And this is what I find incredibly exciting because it means we’re not losing the traditional power of Tarot.

We’re actually expanding upon it.

We’re taking everything the cards can reveal and using it to create a reading that is so much more conscious, more collaborative, and ultimately more useful to the person receiving it, so it creates more lasting change and helps the client integrate what they truly need to learn from the reading.

And it asks us as Tarot readers to become more skilled, more thoughtful, and more intentional in how we read.

But it also allows us to offer something much deeper than just a prediction.

And this is where, again, a lot of my work has been evolving.

Because as Tarot itself evolves, the way we prepare readers for this work has also needed to evolve too.

It’s no longer enough to teach someone how to interpret the cards and deliver a reading from start to finish.

We also need to teach readers how to frame empowering questions, explore possibilities without presenting one fixed truth, involve a client in the meaning making process, and help them identify what they want to do next.

Because the goal is not just to have someone leave a reading and think, “Oh, yep, that’s what the reader told me was going to happen.”

It’s for them to leave that reading and think, “Ah, yes, I get this. I understand this differently now. I can see the choices in front of me, and I know what I need to do next.”

That’s the opportunity sitting in front of us as Tarot readers.

Because the expectations of a reading are changing and shifting, and that’s asking us to evolve.

We’re being called to move beyond predicting what might happen or telling what the cards mean, into a more meaningful expression of what Tarot can offer.

And it’s one that helps people understand themselves more deeply, recognize the patterns shaping their lives, reconnect with their own inner wisdom, and make conscious choices about what happens next.

And this is what is really exciting because it gives Tarot a far more powerful role to play, and it helps us as readers step into a more evolved version of this work.

So I want you to take a moment to reflect on your own Tarot readings.

When you have done a reading, do you just go, “Oh, phew, thank God I’ve finished interpreting their cards”?

Or do you allow space for your client to integrate what they’ve heard and start to articulate their natural next step?

And do you also allow space for the person to understand what is shaping a particular outcome, what they can influence, and the choices available to them?

Or are you simply telling them what the card means?

Now, if you want to explore this with the Tarot cards, you can pull a card and ask yourself, “How can I make my Tarot readings more empowering and transformational?”

And then, of course, choose one shift to practice in your next reading.

It might be reframing a question into one that opens up more choice.

Or maybe you’re inviting the client to share what they see in the card.

Or maybe you finish your reading by asking them, “Okay, so what do you want to do next? What choices are available for you?”

Because the best readings don’t leave people more dependent on the reader.

They help people trust themselves more.

And the moment you step into this, you have the opportunity to expand as a Tarot reader.

But also, the reality is that the level of responsibility changes too.

So if someone’s trusting you with their uncertainty, their choices, and the parts of their life they may not share anywhere else, what makes you worthy of that trust as a reader?

So that’s where we’re going to go in the next episode, and really explore what it means to be a trustworthy Tarot reader in this new age, in this new era, and what extra level of responsibility we need to step into.

So you’re not going to want to miss this episode.
